In the 17th century British colonists settled in North Smithfield and developed a farming community named after a small town in Smithfield, England. Our town was part of Smithfield, RI until it was incorporated as North Smithfield in 1871.

The village of Slatersville, at the heart of the community as a gathering place, touts a beautiful town common and white steeple church. We are proud residents of “America’s first planned industrial mill village”. There is history in every step you take! Should you venture down the hill from the Common, you will see the Slaters Mill, which has significant historic value.
